In Afuera, Roberto Salas came of age by discovering his sexuality, dealing with his family, finding first love and forming deep friendships. Now on his own in a new city, Roberto hopes for a fresh start. But new beginnings bring new challenges; work, school, and sex compete for his time. How will he juggle them all when life throws him some unexpected curve balls? "Fuerte A Journey Continued", delves into Roberto's discovery that being a young adult in Los Angeles, away from everything he knows, is far crazier than anything his past has prepared him for.

Having read Marcelino's first Roman a clef and having absolutely loved it, I started FUERTE with great hope and a certain amount of fear. I hoped he would deliver but I feared he had set a very high bar with AFUERA and he might not meet what I acknowledged to be my own high expectations at the time. Well, I need not have feared because my hope was fulfilled. I thoroughly enjoyed every trinket, snippet and gem in FUERTE. Not only has Marcelino proven himself to be an engaging, natural-born and gifted storyteller, but he has also further honed his skills in a colloquial and accessible style of writing that I find to be charming, witty and fiercely naughty, the kind of naughty that makes you won't let you stop reading.Whereas the storyline in AFUERA seemed to be more linear, I found FUERTE to be more time-less. Each chapter has a life of its own and while reading the book, the writing of David Sedaris came to mind in comparison. I look forward to hearing and reading more from this young and wise-beyond-his-years author. I just know the journey has only begun and I am happily in for the long haul.

Fuerte A Journey Continued Marcelino Rosas 9780985943714 Books Reviews
If you've read Afuera, you know how powerful of a storyteller Marcelino Rosas can be. His story of a young boy coming of age in the midst of confusion and crisis around his sexual identity sparks memories in many of us -- of first times, of curiosity, of heartbreak and despair, as well as love and success.
Fuerte, a continuation of the story we left in Afuera, tells an equally powerful story. As Marcelino's second book, you can see the evolution and development of his talent as a writer -- he draws the reader in with intricately detailed descriptions. Many of us have been where Marcelino's main character, Roberto, has been, and he makes us feel and relive every moment and every emotion. This is what we look for in a story -- emotion that excites us and experiences that relate to us. You'll find all of that in Marcelino's fantastic follow up to his first book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. There is a genuine quality to the story and I didn't want to put it down. I kept thinking, "Ok, just one more chapter," but I'd read chapter after chapter in one sitting. The author is obviously more seasoned in his second work, and improves upon the dynamic and engaging writing style he used to capture my attention in his first book. In this continuation of the story of Roberto, the character we got to know in Rosas' first installment, "Afuera," we experience the head-spinning plot twists, and sometimes humbling, but often hopeful and heartwarming evolution of an adolescent into young adulthood. It reads like a biography, although it's a work of fiction. Perhaps it's a bit semi-autobiographical? Knowing that the author has worked as a model and the main character in his books becomes a model... well, I don't want to give away too much of the book. Let's just say, there are some parts of the story that seem a tad too real to not have come from at least partial personal experience. If there's no truth to the story whatsoever, then an extra "Bravo" goes to the author for coming up with such a well-rounded and thoughtful development of the character and his journey. Like the first book, I think "Fuerte A Journey Continued" would make a great movie. I would recommend this book to just about anyone - except that it's quite explicit in some areas - and for that reason, I'm keeping my recommendations to adults... and anyone mature enough to read that type of content. Get ready for a page-turning, pulse-pounding, thought-provoking, and heartwarming experience.
What I especially liked about this book was the realistic portrayals of people with whom the protagonist, Roberto Salas, has various adventures. His meeting with "hoodie guy" was something I didn't expect, and that was true for most of the book it is full of surprises.
Rather than try to impress us with a larger than life hero, Roberto has flaws. He's not some superhero, but he sure does have some interesting interludes. From the modelling career to tying the knot at the end, the stories really flew by and kept me interested. While some writers might have given into the temptation to over-do the comedy or pathos of Roberto's journey, I felt the author stayed true to his story. It was a pleasant and satisfying read from start to finish.
Saving the best for last was the character Miss Alada Mann. I don't know if this is a real person, or the product of a remarkable imagination, but the telling of that story was the best. It's absolutely hilarious. Probably the most hilariously screwball ceremony ever! Very clever writing. Hope there is more in the future.
As a person who tends to read novels word for word (unlike technical publications where I skim the material to pick out important details and facts) I was thoroughly captivated by Marcelino's latest novel "Fuerte; A Journey Continued". Roberto's character comes alive and one can feel his struggles, his fears, his happiness, his loves and general humanity as he goes through the trial and tribulations of becoming his own being.
As the reader, I became so emotionally involved with what the author had put into print that I actually teared up in Chapter 12. As I said, a good read.
I loved this glimpse into Roberto's life as a model. I felt like I was there along for the glamorous ride. It was a great follow up to his first book, and I hope there will be more to come!
What I really LOVED about this book, is that it kept me wondering what would happen next. Certain parts left me asking myself whether the scenario actually did occur, merely because it seemed too juicy to have been factual, or simply just slight jealousy that it didn't occur in my own life story. Front to back, start to finish - not a single portion wasn't filled with intrigue or endearment of the events occurring in Roberto's life. A wonderful addition to his story, that I only hope will continue on to a third segment. Kudos.
